Because of its lack of water and good routes, the Judean wilderness has been mostly uninhabited throughout history. Consequently it was an ideal place for David to seek refuge from Saul or to retreat from the world to fast and pray like Jesus did..
Ein Gedi
En Gedi is located on the western shore of the Dead Sea 23 mi. from Jerusalem, and 10 mi. north of Masada. En Gedi was allotted to the tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:62). David hid at En Gedi from Saul (1 Samuel 24), and it was also famous for its vineyards (Song of Songs 1:14).

Qumrum
Qumrum is site near where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls were found in the late 1940’s. It is located on a rise 1 mi. west of the Dead Sea, 8.5 mi. south southeast of Jericho, and 13 mi. east of Jerusalem.
